The eagle's nest awakens from hibernation: On Saturday (May 14) the Tegernseer Hütte will start operating again.

There's hut romance here but only against a 3G proof.

– Mountaineering is booming.

That was the case before Corona, but the pandemic has intensified the trend.

Preparations for the summer season are currently underway in many huts - and Josef Klenner, President of the German Alpine Association (DAV) is convinced: "We will experience a rush in the mountains." Klenner expects a big one this summer, especially in the hotspots of the Bavarian Alps Intake.

The Tegernseer Hütte is undoubtedly one of these hotspots.

It scores above all with its spectacular location on the ridge between Roßstein and Buchstein at 1650 meters above sea level and also offers two newly renovated sleeping quarters after a conversion.

If you want to stay here, you have to be quick.

"We already have quite a few registrations," reports Michl Ludwig, who has leased the DAV hut for around 30 years.

In May, June and July there are only a few remaining places for two Saturdays - otherwise these favorite days are already reserved.

Even for September and October some weekends are already full.

Ludwig is not surprised by the great demand: "We expected that."

Corona: The landlord of the Tegernseer Hütte wants to remain cautious

While elsewhere in the mountains and in the huts pandemic-related restrictions are no longer an issue, this year you can only stay overnight at the Tegernseer Hütte if you present a 3G certificate.

In addition, the host would like to leave a space between the different groups of visitors in order to maintain the necessary distance.

"It's just damn tight for us," Ludwig explains the precautionary measures.

He also wants to protect his employees and himself from a possible corona infection.

"If two people drop out, it's no longer feasible," says the tenant, who runs the Tegernsee section hut with the support of his wife Sylvia and a few helpers.

Hut terrace can be fully occupied again: fear of the rush

The landlord is used to a lot by now.

The complex conversion of the hut including fire protection upgrades and the Corona requirements have demanded a lot from him in the past two seasons.

But Ludwig is also not without concern about the upcoming summer in the mountains: Now that the restrictions in the catering trade have been lifted, "everyone will probably be pushing full throttle onto the terrace," fears the host.

In Corona times, when seating was severely limited, long queues sometimes formed on the narrow ridge in front of the hut.

Now the host can fully occupy the terrace again.

Around 60 to 70 guests can sit down here for a drink and a snack.

On nice days, people waiting there are already looking for the next free seat.

In order to avoid the big crowds inside the hut, at least before the bar is served, Ludwig will not be self-service again this year – food and drinks will be brought to the table.

“We want to use this to equalize the whole thing a bit,” he says.

DAV chairman announces measures in the sanitary area of the hut

Meanwhile, Rainer Toepel, chairman of the DAV Tegernsee section, very much hopes that the hut will run unhindered this year and that pre-Corona times can be continued.

After all, the club still has some plans for its Tegernseer Hütte even after the costly renovation.

The sanitary area should be brought up to scratch this year if possible.

According to Toepel, new bio-filters are needed to ventilate the sanitary rooms, and the waste containers in the toilets also need to be upgraded.

And finally, the hut should get a completely new sewage treatment plant.

The plans are under way, says Toepel.

Implementation is planned for the end of the season.

After completion, Toepel and Ludwig are delighted that the hut will be technically and structurally up to date.
