UAE President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed al-Nahian passed away today (Friday) at the age of 73, the official emirate news agency announced.
In recent years, the president of the Arab Federation has suffered from a serious health condition.
Against this background, his successor was his brother Muhammad bin Zayed al-Nahian, who serves as heir apparent.
The latter was in fact the de facto ruler of the country so its integrity is not expected to have a dramatic impact on relations with Israel.
Following the death of the leader, it was decided in the UAE to lower the flags to half-mast, as well as to disable state institutions as a sign of mourning.
The shutdown will last for three days and the flags will be lowered to half-mast for a period of 40 days.
