Angelika Debes and her husband hiked through three US states on the Pacific Crest Trail.

With her book, she wants to encourage people to make their dreams come true

Benediktbeuern - "When we came back from the big trip, it was clear to me that I wanted to move out of the city and into the country," says Angelika Debes.

So the native of Munich, who had completed all stages of life from birth to school and high school to university in her hometown, came to Benediktbeuern in August 2019.

"I've always loved hiking"

"I've always loved hiking, especially in the mountains," she adds.

And anyone who sits in her living room and lets their gaze wander to the mountain peaks will understand why she likes it so much here.

"I'm not drawn back to Munich at all," she emphasizes.

"Being able to go on a hike directly from the house is simply fantastic."

After a TV report, Debes wanted to experience the route for himself

Her passion for hiking is also the reason for today's visit.

Debes has written a book about a six-month hike on the Pacific Crest Trail that she did with her husband Simon from April to September 2018.

A few years earlier, she happened to see a TV report about this route and the desire to experience it for herself has never left her.

Pacific Crest Trail as a honeymoon

But the question was: When is it right?

After graduating from high school, she initially trained as a tax clerk and then went on to study business administration.

She dedicated the following master's degree to the focus on human resource management.

So there was never time for the long journey.

"But a friend said, if you don't do it in college, when will you?" That convinced Debes so much that she proposed to her husband - and brought the Pacific Crest Trail into play as a honeymoon.

A clever move!

Also because Simon, as an enthusiastic photographer, was able to capture the experiences in pictures.

Trial tours as preparation

The fact that a book should come out of it was not an issue at first.

In preparation for the trail, Debes bought countless books (“most of which I didn't read after all”) and did a few test tours, not least to find out how much the backpack can weigh at most.

"I started with 24 kilos - and soon realized that it had to be less!" In further tests, 9 kilos proved to be a practicable basic weight.

"In addition, there are food and drinks, so that up to 16 kilos per person came about."

You learn to appreciate a shower and a bed again

In addition to a change of clothes, crockery, a gas cooker and sleeping mats, the tent also had to be transported.

The couple definitely wanted to be able to travel independently.

"But we were happy to stay in the hostel once a week - if only because of the warm shower and the soft bed, which you learn to appreciate all over again..."

The couple trekked through three states

The two of them walked more than 4,200 kilometers and needed 160 days.

They hiked through three states in the western United States: from California to Oregon to Washington.

They met bears twice.

"In California, a brown bear approached us undeterred, we drove it away with a bang." And on the last day of the tour, they ran into a mother bear with two little ones.

"That could have been dangerous," explains Debes.

"We dodged them and took a side route." There was a rattlesnake encounter on the very first day.

And the near-collision with a skunk went smoothly: "If they feel threatened and squirt their secretions, you can't get the stench out of your clothes anymore..."

The worst and the best experience

Debes singles out the best experience as hitchhiking when they met an elderly gentleman who immediately invited them to his home for the weekend.

"And his wife cooked wonderfully for us!" In general, you meet so many helpful people.

And the worst experience?

“A night we spent too high in the mountains.

It was so bitterly cold that I couldn't sleep," Debes recalls.

“But I would definitely do this trip again!” With her book, she wants to encourage people to make their dreams come true: “Now I listen more to my heart and my intuition.

That feels good!” The author published the book herself at Books on Demand.

It is also available in some bookstores.
