The G7 foreign ministers issued a joint statement on May 14, promising to continue to support Ukraine in military, financial and economic aspects, and asked China not to support Russia's aggression against Ukraine.
The statement also referred to Hong Kong, calling on Beijing to respect Hong Kong's high degree of autonomy.
The G7 foreign ministers' meeting was held in northern Germany for two consecutive days from May 13.
German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock, who chaired the meeting, said the Russian-Ukrainian war had turned into a global crisis.
The joint statement of foreign ministers after the meeting said that the Russian-Ukrainian war is triggering a global food and energy crisis, threatening poor countries, and urgent measures are needed to prevent Russia from preventing food shipments from leaving Ukraine.
The statement also asked China not to support Russia's aggression against Ukraine, that is, to undermine sanctions against Russia or to take Russia's aggression against Ukraine as legitimate.
The statement also said that it regretted the decline of Hong Kong's pluralism and restrictions on civil and political rights, called on the Hong Kong government to respect human rights, the rule of law, the independence and democratic principles of the judicial system, and urged China to abide by its international commitments and legal obligations, including the "China-UK". The obligations under the Joint Declaration and the Basic Law respect Hong Kong's high degree of autonomy and the rights and freedoms of its residents.
