The United Nations Security Council strongly condemned the killing of Palestinian journalist Shireen Abu Aqleh and the injury of another journalist a few days ago in the city of Jenin in the West Bank.
Agence France-Presse stated that the statement, which was unanimously issued by the council members, called for an “immediate, comprehensive, transparent and impartial investigation into the killing of Abu Aqila,” and stressed “the need to ensure that the perpetrator or perpetrators of this killing are held accountable.”
The statement stressed that "journalists should be protected during hostilities and conflicts as civilians."
Diplomats, who spoke on condition of anonymity, described the negotiations that led to the approval of the statement's text as arduous, as the United States tried to include paragraphs to target countries opposed to its policies in exchange for condemning the Israeli occupation.
Abu Aqila was martyred last Wednesday morning while covering the Israeli aggression on Jenin camp, where the occupation forces targeted her with a bullet in the head, which drew widespread Palestinian, Arab and international condemnation and calls for an international investigation into this crime.
The occupation was not satisfied with this crime, but yesterday attacked its funeral procession in the occupied city of Jerusalem, which led to the injury of dozens of Palestinians and the arrest of 14 others.
