The boat, which was damaged, was intercepted when it was about 6 km off the coast of northeastern Tunisia.

The boat had left on the night of May 13 to 14, from the village of Abu Kammash, in the far west of Libya, very close to the Tunisian border, according to the testimonies of the candidates for immigration who said be between 20 and 38 years old.

They were brought back to El Ktef port, near Ben Guerdane, not far from the Libyan border, to be taken care of by the National Guard.

At the beginning of May, the Tunisian authorities announced that they had found the bodies of 24 migrants who had drowned after the sinking of their boats off the coast of central-eastern Tunisia.

Between April 22 and 30, four boats capsized off the coast of Sfax, causing the drowning of migrants rescued in the following days, while 97 people were rescued.

Hundreds of migrants, mainly from sub-Saharan Africa, reach Tunisia with the aim of then reaching Europe, crossing the Mediterranean, most often piling up on makeshift boats.

Italy is one of the main entry points into Europe for migrants from North Africa, who arrive mainly from Tunisia and Libya, two countries from which departures have increased considerably in 2021.
