Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova described the statements of the US authorities about freedom of expression and the media in Russia as laughable.

"The US ambassador to Russia, John Sullivan, said that many Russians, especially young people, seek access to other sources of information that are not under the control of the government, but this is very difficult at a time when his country has a monopoly on the Internet to block Russian media," Zakharova said on her Telegram channel.

Zakharova pointed out that Washington has pursued WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange for many years because he published US documents, adding, "This is what the ambassador of the country whose banks have frozen the accounts of the Russian media ... This is funny."

The Russian Ambassador to the United States, Anatoly Antonov, had recently confirmed that Washington is exploiting the human rights issue to discredit countries and political regimes that are not in line with its policies.
