Strong winds in the Sea of Galilee, May 15, 2022 (Oshri Weizmann)

The residents of Tiberias woke up this morning (Sunday) to the harsh sights of the promenade that was badly damaged by the windstorm that took place tonight in the Sea of Galilee.

The municipality estimates that the damages amount to tens of millions of shekels.

Later in the day, Tourism Minister Yoel Rezbozov is expected to arrive in the city, and city residents are calling on the government to declare the case a natural disaster - and help the city.

The chairman of the committee in charge and the acting mayor of Tiberias, Boaz Yosef, said that "due to an easterly wind, the waters of the Sea of Galilee rose over the entire coastal strip and very heavy damage was caused to the city's jurisdiction.

This is damage of about NIS 140 million.

Unfortunately, the promenade we have developed in the last two years has been badly damaged.

In the first stage, in order to maintain the safety and well-being of passers-by, we work feverishly to remove the collapsed fences and evacuate the many hazards that the storm has caused them.

"For fear of injury, I ask all curious people not to go to the damaged centers."

According to Tiberias resident Oshri Weizmann, he has never seen storms with such intensity as happened tonight.

Weizmann, a social activist and a member of the municipality's environmental committee, said that "the easterly winds were so strong that they caused the Sea of Galilee to surge in waves that reached a height of more than six meters."

He said that "everything started around three in the morning. There were angry winds. I realized it was something unusual and went down to the promenade, I saw in front of my eyes huge waves crashing on the promenade and causing enormous damage. Floors were uprooted, pits, chairs and tables flew "A huge amount of damage was also done to the infrastructure - thin wood and floors were literally torn off the place."

He noted that only six months ago, about five million shekels were invested in the promenade that the government transferred, and that he said, "Now everything has gone down the drain."

The heaviest damage was caused to businesses in front of the marina building.

This is a building that was established about 45 years ago and "invades" from the promenade into the Sea of Galilee and is intended to be used for tourism businesses - restaurants, cafes, buffets and souvenir shops.

Beyond the architectural design that strikes the front of the promenade, while the Sea of Galilee comes close to the upper red line, the building and its businesses are exposed to the ravages of the weather, as happened in the morning in an extreme way.

The pier restaurant located in the building was badly damaged.

The restaurant was opened only six months ago by Shimon Cohen from Tiberias.

The place where restaurants used to operate, was closed for a long time and he says he invested a lot of money to reuse the building as well as a large investment in equipment.

He said he was expecting the upcoming summer vacation and the many visitors who would come to the city, but the restaurant was completely destroyed and an initial estimate speaks of damages amounting to about NIS 300,000 caused to it.

"The place looks like after the war," he said.

"

"We are only 25 inches below the maximum level and that is definitely a blessing," Weizmann said.

"But this time it was the fact that the Sea of Galilee was high that intensified the extent of the damage. It is clear that if the level had been lower, the water would not have affected the promenade so much, but these are the forces of nature."

According to Rafael Trabelsi, a former city council member, "this is a natural disaster."

Trabelsi added that "the Israeli government must declare a natural disaster in Tiberias today and help rehabilitate the city in public areas and business owners. Remember, the Sea of Galilee belongs to all the people of Israel and not just the city of Tiberias," he said.

May is a month when weather disasters hit Tiberias drastically.

The current storm occurred exactly 88 years after the heaviest catastrophe that befell the city in the last century - on May 14, 1934 a heavy flood and a huge mudslide descended from the mountains above the city and flooded it.

In the flood, 32 people drowned and about a hundred were injured.

The city, most of whose inhabitants lived within the Old City, by the sea, was destroyed.

It was an extreme weather event, and according to the data, in less than an hour, 52 millimeters of rain fell in the area.

So, as mentioned, the flood came from the west of the city, while tonight it came from the east, from the Sea of Galilee.
