The British newspaper, Daily Express, revealed the presence of British fighters trapped inside the Azovstal factory, the last stronghold of Ukrainian extremists in the city of Mariupol, Donetsk People's Republic.
Among those trapped at the Azovstal plant are three British soldiers with previous combat experience in Afghanistan, two are former infantry corporals and the third is a former combat medic.
The newspaper added that "the former soldiers were among a thousand or so British veterans who volunteered to fight alongside Ukrainian forces in the east but were sent to the south to reinforce the Azov battalion."
And she continued: "Their presence was revealed by another former British soldier who joined the so-called International Brigade in Donetsk before he was injured and transferred to the city of Lviv in the west for treatment."
The Russian units and the Donetsk People's Forces had taken control of the entire city of Mariupol, except for the Azovstal factory, where the remnants of the Azov extremist battalion, foreign mercenaries and Ukrainian forces were hiding.
