The FDP top candidate Joachim Stamp described his party's result in the state elections in North Rhine-Westphalia as a bitter defeat.
"It's absolutely clear that we can't go back to business as usual here," Stamp said at the FDP election party on Sunday evening in Düsseldorf.
"I would have liked to have brought you and you a different result," said the incumbent family minister and FDP country chief.
Düsseldorf - Stamp emphasized that the party would not look for mistakes in others, but in itself.
"We're staying together and we're going to be strong together, too," Stamp said.
According to the first projections on ZDF and ARD, the FDP has to accept losses of more than 7 percentage points and ends up at around 5 percent.
