Finland today officially adopted a document stating its intention to apply to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) for membership in it.
The French press agency quoted Finnish President Sauli Niinisto as saying today that he had "jointly agreed with the government's foreign policy committee that Finland would apply to join NATO after consulting with Parliament, that it is the beginning of a new era."
It is scheduled that this document will be presented to the government during a session that will be held this afternoon, and then it will be transmitted after its adoption by the Council of Ministers to the Finnish Parliament.
Russia strongly criticized these plans to join Finland and Sweden, warning that in this case it will have to take military and other technical response measures.
Yesterday, Russian President Vladimir Putin discussed this issue by phone with his Finnish counterpart Niinistö, where he warned that abandoning Helsinki's military neutrality would be a mistake and that there was no danger to Finland from Russia.
