The success of games like Roblox can not be ignored: an online platform that gives users all the tools so that they can create their own games and interactions thus enabling creative and groundbreaking freedom available to just about anyone who wants it.

The potential of the platform is so vast and endless that there are a variety of examples that players have taken advantage of: a network user created a competing game for Battlefield 2042 of game giant EA that garnered more active players than the original game on which it was based, or even Spotify who took advantage of its position as streaming giant Where she intends to invest and hold events with future artists.

Now it seems that Epic Games, the company that developed Fortnite, is also interested in a permanent user base that will use their platform and create games that they can manage and monetize continuously.

Tim Sweeney

, CEO of Epic Games was recently interviewed on the Fast Company website where he noted that

during 2022

He wants to upgrade Fortnite and add to the game the development tools of the company's home game engine - Unreal 5, which will give users full access and control so that they can develop their own games using Fortnite, so that they will not actually require prior knowledge in game development or programming.

While Fortnite already has a Creative Mode that allows players to create their own mini-games, the addition of Unreal 5 tools will open up a huge variety of options for users that will allow them to create much more complex and complete gaming experiences.

Sweeney noted that in recent years there has been a sharp increase in the number of users in the game's creation mode and less time spent on Battle Royale itself, and Epic sees this as an opportunity to take advantage of and access the tools they typically offer for game developers, and open themselves to new users.

"Our goal is to open ourselves up to all consumers just like the mobile stores, consoles and platform sets. People are starting to look more in the direction of Fortnite and Roblox in the same way. On top of all that we are trying to build an economy that feeds itself and supports creators through their creations. Build businesses around the works that generate revenue from publications and exposure of actors who will play in their content, ”Sweeney noted.

More and more companies in the industry are realizing that once players are given unlimited freedom of action so that they can create their own experiences they will be able to enjoy a regular user audience on their platforms.

The phenomenon is not new and already in the nineties companies like iD Software gave players the option to play with the engine of games like the classic Doom that have drawn quite a few different variations and thanks over the years.

Valve, for example, also set up the Workshop on a computer set platform, allowing players to create complete and thankful games for games in the Source engine shared with other users - thus creating an entire community that feeds itself and produces creative content.

Games like Counter Strike or Team Fortress began within the modes of the Half Life game -

which indicates the huge potential and what happens when you allow the player community to become content creators as well.
