The SPD ends up behind the CDU in the state elections in North Rhine-Westphalia.
Secretary General Kühnert is already planning a coalition.
Düsseldorf/Berlin – NRW elected a new state parliament on Sunday (May 15).
The CDU sees the first projections and forecasts for the state elections in North Rhine-Westphalia well ahead of the SPD.
Kevin Kühnert, Secretary General of the Social Democrats, is apparently already preparing the option of a red-green coalition in North Rhine-Westphalia.
"Black and yellow has been deselected," he said shortly after 6 p.m. on ARD.
The alliance of the SPD and the Greens is very popular in Germany, so we now have to explore it, says Kühnert.
It "wouldn't be a novelty" for the second-placed party to lead a coalition.
The general secretary said the election result was not a defeat for the SPD.

Ex-Health Minister Jens Spahn attested to Kevin Kühnert a “shock” given the result of the North Rhine-Westphalia state election.
Kühnert countered that it was just a matter of "contortions".
