Petershausen – Road traffic in Petershausen is increasing, especially Jetzendorfer Straße with the underpass is more heavily loaded since the Edeka supermarket moved from the center to Mitterfeldstraße.

And next year the new six-group children's home will open there.

How could the traffic situation, especially for pedestrians and cyclists, be improved there?

16 people from Petershausen discussed this during an on-site visit with Mayor Marcel Fath (FW) on Thursday evening.

The concrete danger around the underpass became frighteningly clear during the inspection: In the middle of the conversation, an ambulance rushed past because a person had been injured in a traffic accident at the Mitterfeldstrasse junction.

There is therefore a need for action, that is undisputed.

But what to do?

One option would be a combined footpath and cycle path, which must be at least 2.50 meters wide, as City Hall boss Fath explained in detail with plan drawings, sketches and data sheets.

The roadway and pavement were then meticulously measured.

And indeed, the street space could be remodeled and made narrower to create space for a footpath and cycle path on one side of the street.

“But why put pedestrians and cyclists on the same level?” asked one participant.

"Pedestrians should have priority number one, otherwise there will be new conflicts." Cyclists could continue to cycle on the road.

There was great approval for evenly widened sidewalks on both sides of the street.

As a result, the narrowed roadway "makes an enormous difference" and slows down the flow of traffic, according to one participant.

But no matter how: A street conversion will not happen in the short term.

"There's nothing we can do about it," Fath said.

Only when the district rehabilitates the district road as planned can the community initiate the redesign.

It can take eight to twelve years until then.”

A roundabout at the intersection of Mitterfeldstrasse, Jetzendorferstrasse and Ziegeleistrasse would also reduce the speed of vehicles.

A roundabout would be feasible, and the municipality had this examined a few years ago.

But because such a complete conversion costs a lot of money and is currently not necessary in terms of traffic flow, the municipality will not take action, according to Mayor Fath.

There will also be no cycle lanes marked on the street, which are less expensive from a financial point of view.

The mayor doesn't think much of that: "The red color is gone again after a year." For a zebra crossing or a traffic light, on the other hand, the necessary traffic and pedestrian numbers are missing.

But Tempo 30 could help, if possible to the end of the town.

Erna Feicht submitted this proposal in writing prior to the on-site visit.

In fact, the municipality cannot simply order a speed limit on a district road like Jetzendorfer Straße where it is considered sensible.

Tempo 30 is only possible in front of facilities such as schools or daycare centers.

"But that has to be justified," the mayor said.

With the new kindergarten "we can try it".

But the speed limit then only applies during school and daycare opening hours, not in the evenings and on weekends.

One citizen found this patchwork of 30 km/h zones with different periods of validity more than annoying.

“Why not a general speed limit of 30 in town?

That shows what the priorities are, just car, car, car?”

Conclusion of the discussion: The municipality will apply to the responsible traffic authority in the Dachau district office to extend the speed limit to after the underpass, the mayor announced.

Fath: "Because Tempo 30 is the fastest measure."
