Lower Saxony's Prime Minister Stephan Weil does not see the SPD in North Rhine-Westphalia out of the race to form a government.
"We have to wait for the final result," said the SPD politician on Sunday in Hanover, recalling the Lower Saxony state elections in 2013. "The SPD also became the second strongest force at the time, and yet I've been Prime Minister since then," said Weil.
Hanover - "Due to the great electoral success of the Greens in North Rhine-Westphalia, both a traffic light coalition or possibly a red-green coalition could have a majority," said the Prime Minister of Lower Saxony.
But he also admitted that "the result is disappointing for us and the SPD had hoped for more".
However, it has not been decided at the moment whether it will be a political success or failure, emphasized Weil: "The formation of a government is open."

However, the head of government in Hanover does not want to see the NRW elections as a signal for the upcoming Lower Saxony state elections in autumn.
The starting position was completely different, judged Weil.
"We've been governing Lower Saxony successfully for years and our policies also have a lot of approval." Nevertheless, the SPD in Lower Saxony still has "a lot of work" to do in order to become the strongest force again in October.
