Sweden's ruling Social Democratic Party has agreed to the country's candidacy for membership in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), which paves the way for the government to submit an official application for admission along with Finland.
"The party leadership has decided that the party will contribute to Sweden's candidacy for NATO membership," the party said in a statement after an emergency meeting today.
"In the event of joining the alliance, Sweden will oppose the deployment of nuclear weapons and permanent military bases for it on its territory," the statement said.
Sweden's decision comes on the heels of Finland's announcement of its decision to apply to join NATO.
It is noteworthy that Russia has strongly criticized these plans for Finland and Sweden to join the alliance, warning that in this case it will have to take military and other technical response measures.
