The accession of Finland and Sweden, a strategic transformation for NATO

2022-05-15T17:37:44.030Z

DECRYPTION - As a result of the Russian threat materialized by the war in Ukraine, the two Nordic countries have taken a decisive step towards joining the Atlantic Alliance. For NATO, the stakes are not neutral.

The reason is always the same: faced with Russia and the threats it represents, the countries of Europe are knocking one after the other on NATO's door.

Two years after the accession of North Macedonia, the thirtieth member of the Alliance, Finland submitted an application for membership on Sunday, thus ending more than half a century of neutrality, a choice then forced in the World War II rubble.

"A new era is dawning

," Finnish President Sauli Niinistö said on Sunday, announcing his country's candidacy.

Sweden should soon do the same.

For the small Republic of the former Yugoslavia, in 2020, as for the Scandinavian states, it is a question of protecting itself against the Russian giant.

“You caused this.

Look at yourself in the mirror”

, had launched last week Sauli Niinistö in the direction of Moscow.
