Tens of thousands of protesters took to the streets yesterday (Saturday) in cities across the United States, two weeks after the leak of a draft opinion from the Supreme Court, which stated that the judges intend to overturn the "Row v. Wade" ruling and the right to safe abortion.

Thousands demonstrated in Washington, D.C., some wearing T-shirts that read "Do not touch our bodies" and "Keep abortions safe and legal."

The protesters pledged to continue fighting to preserve the right to abortion, although many have already agreed with the thought that a historic ruling from 1973 would be overturned.

Colin Lansford of Virginia told the New York Times that she came to protest for the "future and autonomy" of her five-year-old daughter.

"I'm terrified. We've elected a Democratic president and a House of Representatives and a Senate, and it's still happening," she said.

More than 450 demonstrations were held in the United States yesterday, including in Los Angeles, Washington DC, Chicago, Nashville and Austin in Texas.

The organizers planned a nationwide march for the right to abortion before the document was leaked, but were forced to expedite plans after the judges' opinion was revealed.

US President Joe Biden, who is preparing for the midterm elections in November, hopes the issue will excite and spur voters.

On Wednesday, Democrats in the Senate failed to pass legislation that would make the Row vs. Wade ruling a federal law - due to Republican opposition.

In Los Angeles, protesters came to the City Hall and shouted "We will not go back, we will not go back."

About 5,000 people attended the rally.

In Brooklyn, thousands took to the streets as well and gathered at Manhattan Polly Square.

California Sen. Alex Padilla, a Democrat, spoke at the rally and said "we will not stand aside and watch as extremist politicians make laws about your body. You will make the decisions about your body, not anyone else's."
