Wolfratshausen – The Japanese twin town of Iruma sent a sign of solidarity and friendship to the Ukrainian town of Brody: Committed citizens of Iruma collected the equivalent of 1,500 euros in donations to support the needy people in Brody.

Another action is to follow.

The great bond can now be seen as a reaction to the war in Ukraine: Takashima Kenichi, a citizen of the city of Iruma, organized a fundraiser.

"When we heard about the brutal Russian military invasion of Ukraine on the news on February 24 this year, we immediately remembered and worried about the people of Brody," the statement said.

The Japanese have been looking for a way to help the people of Ukraine who are suffering from this dramatic situation.

That's how they came across the Eastern European Aid that supports Brody's residents.

Donations were then collected at a meeting in Iruma.

"Many Japanese friends attended, donated and wrote some messages together to support the people of Ukraine." The fundraiser participants are praying that the war will end soon and that the day will come when Iruma's citizens will come along The message reads that the people of Brody can again enjoy singing, music and drums at a festival.

Purposefully helping people

Mayor Klaus Heilinglechner was touched: “The people in Iruma were very impressed by the willingness to help of the citizens of Wolfratshausen.”

Through the reporting on the city's website, interested citizens in Iruma were able to get an idea of the great willingness of the people of Wolfratshausen to donate and the handing over of the relief supplies at the Polish-Ukrainian border.

"The citizens of Iruma also feel connected to the people of Brody through our city partnership," said Heilinglechner: "The Japanese therefore wanted to specifically help the people of Brody."

The campaign raised the equivalent of around 1,500 euros in donations.

The city administration of Wolfratshausen established contact with the Eastern European Aid.

The money went into the Eastern Europe Aid account in the last week of April and has already been forwarded to the mayor of Brody, Andriy Belej.

Another fundraiser is currently being worked on in Iruma.

"We are planning another meeting in Sado City, Niigata Prefecture in Japan, which is a sister city of Iruma, to conduct another fundraiser," the organizers in Iruma said.

In this way, a partner city can support the other and thus expand the circle.
