Eliran and Zena, a 30-year-old Jerusalem resident, were arrested this morning (Monday) on suspicion of smuggling cigarettes into Israel in a commercial quantity, worth six million shekels, while making a false declaration to customs and evading tax.
According to the suspicion, Vazana tried to help a Palestinian importer smuggle the goods into the authority, in exchange for a commission.
The cigarette boxes were found inside a container that was declared to contain carpets and tissue paper.
The investigation was opened following an inspection of a container that arrived at the port of Haifa, where many boxes of cigarettes of various types were hidden.
This is in contrast to the importer's statement, according to which the contents of the container are carpets and tissue paper.
Police are continuing to investigate the incident and meanwhile Zena was released on restrictive conditions.
