The political year 2022 brings two ambitious CDU winners to light.

Daniel Günther and Hendrik Wust.

Could they also be an option for the K-question?

Kiel/Düsseldorf - "The CDU is back," said Friedrich Merz proudly after the state elections in North Rhine-Westphalia.

The party leader wanted them to be understood “also as a federal political mood test”.

After a cruel CDU year 2021, the Christian Democrats are hoping for more pleasant times.

party chairman wear.

Partly embarrassing federal election campaign.

Opposition for the first time in 16 years.

The past year was anything but glorious for the CDU.

With the crashing loss of the Saarland elections in March, the disaster seemed to be taking its course again.

Then, however, the two almost spectacular election victories in Schleswig-Holstein and North Rhine-Westphalia gave the party a boost.

CDU: Günther and Wüst triumph in Schleswig-Holstein and NRW

In Schleswig-Holstein, Prime Minister Daniel Günther got the best CDU result in 40 years: 43.3 percent.

Significantly more than was expected within the party.

The Northern Lights, who were once ridiculed as “Comrade Günther” because of their left-liberal policies, are according to surveys the most popular prime minister in Germany.

It was no surprise that Günther won the Schleswig-Holstein election.

The fact that he brought a whopping 25 percentage points between the CDU and the second-placed Greens, on the other hand, did.

As a reminder: In the federal election, the CDU and CSU together won 24.1 percent.

A week after the northern election, the far more important ballot in North Rhine-Westphalia was on the agenda for the CDU.

Polls had previously seen the CDU and SPD almost neck and neck.

Ultimately, CDU Prime Minister Hendrik Wüst triumphed with 35.7 percent - nine percentage points ahead of the SPD around challenger Thomas Kutschaty.

CDU: Günther and Wüst appointed to higher positions after election victories?

One day after the NRW election, CDU leader Merz was still enthusiastic.

"Since yesterday, the CDU has been back in first place among the German parties." He pointed out that around one in five voters live in the most populous state of North Rhine-Westphalia.

If you can win elections there, you can do the same anywhere in Germany.

An indirect nod to chancellor candidates?

It will be more than three years until the next federal election.

An eternity in the fast-moving political business.

Nevertheless, successful politicians in North Rhine-Westphalia often feel they have a higher calling.

Without exception, men from North Rhine-Westphalia ran for the last election for the CDU party leader.

With Armin Laschet, the Prime Minister of North Rhine-Westphalia was also the candidate for Chancellor.

If the name Daniel Günther were also mentioned in the K question, it would no longer be a big surprise after the landslide victory in Schleswig-Holstein at the latest.

CDU/CSU Chancellor Question: The simple advantage of Günther and Wüst over Merz

One problem remains: Merz, who has not been noticed as a power-waiving politician, also seems to have ambitions for the chancellor candidacy.

He currently smiles mischievously at such questions.

But sooner or later he will have to deal with them.

Otherwise the Union is threatened with a power struggle like 2021.

Not unimportant: Apart from the political, the election winners Günther and Wüst differ significantly from their party leader in one point.

They are 48 and 46 years old respectively, while Merz will be 69 years old in the next federal election.

In the Bundestag elections, the Union got its best result by far in the older population group.

20.4 percent of those aged 60 to 69 and 30.8 percent of those over 70 voted for the CDU/CSU.

In the group of 18 to 24 year olds it was only 8.4 percent.

For comparison: The Greens got 24 percent here.

If you also want to appeal to younger target groups, a 69-year-old candidate for chancellor seems at least a possibility.

It is not certain that Günther or Wüst would achieve a better youth result.

However, the two election winners are certainly contenders for higher orders after their brilliant results.

Unlike Markus Söder (55), who was repeatedly mentioned in the K question, they have already successfully contested a state election.

CSU boss Söder still has to prove that in 2023 when there is an election in the Free State.
