For the 2022 census, millions of Bavarians are being asked about their living situation.

Data protection plays an important role - but criticism was voiced early on.

Munich – The 2022 census is the first census since the introduction of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

This year's census is all the more focused on what happens to the information provided by citizens in Bavaria who are asked about their age, place of residence or occupation.

The first criticism of data protection was voiced even during the preparations.

The data for the 2022 census is collected across the EU - and only every ten years.

To ensure that everything runs smoothly, the state started preparations for this year's census early on and passed the first census preparation law in 2017.

So enough lead time for data protection experts to take care of the matter.

And there was reason for criticism: As

datenschutzexperte.de

reports, the fact that the draft law also included questions about religious affiliation came to the fore.

According to the critics, this would contradict the principle of data minimization.

They also went beyond the guidelines set by the EU for the survey.

The federal government reacted to the criticism and introduced innovations in data collection for this year's census.

"Compared to the 2011 census, the household survey does not ask whether you belong to a religious community under public law, or whether you voluntarily ask about your religious affiliation," says the official website of the 2022 census used exclusively from the population registers.

Census 2022 in Bavaria: Herrmann advocates participation

The Bavarian Minister of the Interior, Joachim Herrmann, also ensures maximum data security for the census.

"The protection and confidentiality of data is a top priority for the census," Herrmann said in a May 13 statement.

"The data will be kept strictly confidential in accordance with the provisions of the statistics laws and will not be passed on to other authorities or third parties."

In addition, the Minister of the Interior appealed to the citizens of Bavaria to take part in the surveys and to provide complete and accurate information.

Participation in the census is mandatory anyway.
