The car caused damage to stairs number 16 and 29 on the right, according to the Rome Heritage Protection Authority.
"We will have to renovate the damaged stairs and replace the cracked and broken parts with limestone that will match in terms of color and material to the original stairs," the authority said.
PA technicians assess the economic damage caused and say "extensive cracks, scratches, bruises and precipitation were found on both sides of the stairs".

The Spanish Steps are one of the most famous sites in Rome.
They were built in the 18th century and the name was given to them due to the Spanish Embassy which is located in a palace from a square under the stairs.
In 2015 the stairs underwent a two-year renovation that cost $ 1.6 million under the auspices of the Bulgarian fashion house.
The stairs served as the backdrop for scenes from the 1953 film "Vacation in Rome" starring Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck.
