Projections for the state elections in North Rhine-Westphalia see the AfD and FDP just above the five percent hurdle - but the entry is not yet certain.

Düsseldorf – In Schleswig-Holstein, the AfD flew out of a German state parliament for the first time since it was founded – could it also fail at the five percent hurdle in North Rhine-Westphalia?

A projection by ZDF saw the AfD on Sunday evening in the state elections in North Rhine-Westphalia at 5.5 percent, so they would have cracked the five percent hurdle.

But that is by no means certain at first.

The FDP must also tremble.

According to the same extrapolation, she received only 5.5 percent of the votes.

A massive minus of around seven percentage points.

FDP has to worry about entering the state parliament: Federal Vice speaks of a “severe defeat”

Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann, member of the FDP board, spoke of a "horrible evening" on ARD on Sunday.

FDP federal vice president Johannes Vogel also regretted his party's poor performance in the elections in North Rhine-Westphalia.

"It's a heavy defeat - and it hurts," he said on Sunday evening on ARD.

The election result is something “that really hurts”.

Vogel did not want to assign blame.

The party now wants to look at the result “internally in peace”.

"You win as a team, and you also lose as a team." According to political observers, the FDP election campaign in North Rhine-Westphalia under the slogan "Continue from here" had weaknesses in terms of content.

The Liberals were recently no longer able to clearly distance themselves from the CDU, for example due to the abolition of corona restrictions.

Leaving the state parliament would have massive consequences for the coalition options in NRW.

So the traffic light and Jamaica coalition would be eliminated as options.

Red-green could be within reach.

AfD boss Chrupalla on the result in NRW: "We are satisfied that it is enough"

According to initial projections, the AfD deteriorated in NRW during the election to 5.5 to 6.0 percent (2017: 7.4).

There had previously been speculation as to whether the right-wing populist party would even make it into the NRW parliament.

Because even in the state elections in Schleswig-Holstein, polls had seen the AfD at 6 to 8 percent.

In the end, the AfD was kicked out of a German state parliament for the first time since it was founded.

In view of this, AfD boss Tino Chrupalla was relieved about the expected entry into the NRW state parliament: "We are initially satisfied that in all likelihood it will be enough that we will move in," he said on Sunday on ZDF after the publication of the forecasts .

Nevertheless, the AfD is of course “not entirely satisfied”.

After the state elections in North Rhine-Westphalia, he sees a need for discussion in his party.

"Of course we will have to talk about the extent to which we need a West initiative here over the next few days."

In the election campaign, the right-wing populist party in North Rhine-Westphalia struggled thematically.

In view of the Ukraine war, the corona issue, which was otherwise dominant for the AfD, faded more and more into the background.

In Schleswig-Holstein there were also personal reasons for the poor performance of the AfD, in particular the "presidential appearance" of the CDU Prime Minister Daniel Günther was considered a factor.

Günther managed to involve the opposition in NRW.

He also achieved good approval ratings from AfD supporters, according to a voter migration analysis, around 7,000 AfD votes should have gone to the CDU compared to 2017.

The closeness of many AfD MPs to Putin also played a role, which was not well received by voters in view of the Ukraine war.

The latter could also have played a role in the loss of votes in the AfD in North Rhine-Westphalia
