In the newly launched trial of the Miesbach savings bank affair, the Munich II public prosecutor's office yesterday demanded two and a half years in prison for the former head of the district savings bank, Georg Bromme, and a 15-month suspended sentence for the former CSU district administrator Jakob Kreidl.

Miesbach – The two men are accused of embezzling funds from the savings bank by financing luxurious gifts and trips with work colleagues at the expense of the bank.

The total immaterial damage amounts to 240,000 euros.

The defense attorneys demanded suspended sentences for both men, 15 months for Bromme and nine months for Kreidl.

The verdict is expected to be pronounced on Wednesday.

The two defendants (70 and 73 years) had already been convicted in the case.

In 2019, another criminal division at the Munich II Regional Court sentenced Bromme to a year and a half and Kreidl to eleven months on probation.

On the other hand, the public prosecutor's office and the ex-Sparkassen boss had appealed.

The change in value was repeatedly addressed in the pleadings.

What used to be considered a decades-old practice has, over the years, fallen under the category of over-the-top gifts.

Both defendants were not aware of any guilt at the time because there was no evidence of wrongdoing, they argued.

In the meantime, however, they had recognized their mistakes and asked for forgiveness.

On May 13, there was even a personal apology to the Sparkasse board of directors.

It was a difficult walk for Georg Bromme, after he had been banned there for a long time, said his defense attorney.

According to a protocol presented by the presiding judge, the board of directors accepted the apologies as well as the immaterial perpetrator-victim settlement.

Accordingly, Bromme paid 25,000 euros, Kreidl 15,000 euros.

Before the pleadings, special attention was paid to a possible office holder position for Bromme.

If the court comes to the legal conclusion that the former head of the Sparkasse arranged a trip to the mayor and a birthday party in this capacity, he faces criminal and administrative consequences – similar to Jakob Kreidl.

He already has to give up 30 percent of his pension.

Kreidl's 60th birthday party, which cost the savings bank 118,000 euros, got the affair rolling.

These expenses were not objected to by the Federal Court of Justice (BGH).

Defender Klaus Leipold had his own opinion on this.

He announced to the public prosecutor at the time that he would invite all guests to the celebration as witnesses: from the prime minister to the justice minister to the cardinal.
