While the Nordic countries have announced their accession to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, state television has begun hinting at military action • Member of the European Parliament's Foreign Affairs Committee for "Israel Today": "Sweden will take part in defending European democracy"

The general escalation is gaining momentum in Europe after Sweden announced its intention to go after Finland and join the Defense Alliance.

Russia's state television "will have no choice but to neutralize the new threat."

The last day was marked by reactions to the strategic explosion caused by the Russian invasion of Ukraine after the two Nordic countries announced their accession to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) thus breaking a tradition of neutrality that forced a reshaping of the international balance of power since World War II.

"I hope we will have a quick process. It is vital to our confidence that we join NATO," European Parliament Foreign Affairs Committee member David Lega told Israel Today from his seat in Sweden.

"But of course it is also important that Sweden takes part in defending European democracy, our freedom and values," added Lega, a former lawmaker from the Swedish Democratic Christian Party who now also serves as a member of the EU delegation to Russia.

Meanwhile, the Kremlin's trumpets are pushing for a narrative with high tones of threats and allusions to future military action if Stockholm and Helsinki host NATO bases in their country's territories.

"The official reason for their joining is the fear. But they will be more afraid of NATO.

"When bases appear in Sweden and Finland, Russia will have no choice but to neutralize the new imbalance and threat by deploying tactical nuclear weapons," said one of the studios in a quote published by Steve Rosenberg, a correspondent for the British Broadcasting Corporation in Moscow.

Last night (Sunday) the Swedish Social Democrats announced that it would respond to a request to join the Defense Alliance hours after Helsinki approved the move.

Meanwhile, Russia's military move against Ukraine, which began on February 24, continues to focus on the southeast of the country, with an emphasis on the Donbas region and the crushed port city of Mariupol.
