After the historic defeat of his party in the state elections in North Rhine-Westphalia, resignation is out of the question for SPD top candidate Thomas Kutschaty.
"The discussion did not come up in the board today and is not up for debate," said the SPD state leader and former parliamentary group leader on Monday evening at the sidelines of a meeting of the SPD state executive board in Düsseldorf.
Dusseldorf - "The result is of course sobering," said Kuchaty.
It is now the task of the election winner, the CDU, to first negotiate a government.
The SPD accepts the CDU's announcement that it intends to hold a first round of talks with the Greens.
Nevertheless, the SPD also offers the FDP and the Greens to hold talks about a traffic light.
"However, this is only the second option," said Kuchaty.
First of all, the CDU has the chance to explore a government with the Greens.
The SPD in North Rhine-Westphalia will “not bury its head in the sand”.

There will be "tough negotiations" between the CDU and the Greens, said Kuchaty.
"They should first see if they can get it together or not.
Then we can talk about whether another government should be formed.”
The SPD had its historically worst state election result on Sunday with 26.7 percent, landing 9 percentage points behind the CDU, which received 35.7 percent of the vote.
The Greens were able to almost triple their result to 18.2 percent.
