Severe storm in NRW: In Essen, a man was struck by lightning on Monday and suffered life-threatening injuries.
He had to be resuscitated
Essen – A severe storm front has been moving across large parts of NRW since the afternoon.
Thunderstorms with heavy rain, hail and squalls are the result.
This had devastating consequences in Essen on Monday: A 56-year-old man was struck by lightning and critically injured, as reported by 24RHEIN.

Essen: Man struck by lightning - he had to be resuscitated
The man was at around 3:30 p.m. at the swimming center in the Kettwig district of Essen, as the fire brigade announced in the evening.
When the storm front moved over Essen at the same time, the 56-year-old was struck by lightning.
He was critically injured in the process.
"The alarmed rescue service had to resuscitate the person on site," explains a spokesman for the Essen fire department.
The 56-year-old was stabilized.
The rescue helicopter Christoph 3 from Cologne then brought the man to a special clinic.

The German Weather Service had issued some warnings of the highest level “Purple” (warning of extreme weather) for the afternoon in NRW.
According to the fire department, there were many other operations in Essen.
Filled cellars in particular caused problems in the afternoon and early evening.
In the afternoon, the city of Cologne recommended that citizens avoid forest areas, parks, cemeteries and avenues.
In the meantime, the storm is slowly moving away from the eastern half of NRW.
However, there are still "orange" warnings in several cities and counties.
