A posh hotel was actually supposed to be built on the site.

A bike course is now being built on a section of the former indoor pool area in Mittenwald.

Mittenwald

– Who is building there on the former indoor pool lawn?

That's what many passers-by who were walking along Bahnhofstrasse will have asked themselves on Saturday.

The resolution: It was small and large members of the newly founded Bike Club Mittenwald who built a course riddled with obstacles with machines and equipment.

Thus, the inner-city, community-owned area that has been orphaned for years, on which a posh retreat with the aja hotel was actually supposed to be built, is given a completely unexpected use.

What those responsible in the town hall apparently fully support.

"The municipality unanimously approved a corresponding application by the BCM," explains Mayor Enrico Corongiu (SPD).

For the time being, the market has leased a section of around 2,200 square meters of green space, including the hut that is still there.

The idea for this urban sports park with an asphalted hilly landscape and a closed circular course - Neudeutsch Pumptrack - with the focus on promoting exercise and location attractiveness for Mittenwald came from the second chairman Christoph Klotz and from the ice hockey ex-professional of SC Riessersee, Florian Vollmer.

"The coherent concept for the 280 meter long and 1.50 meter wide circuit with nine banked curves (berms) and waves (rollers) convinced us," says BCM Chairman Heinz Pfeffer.

"Now wooden elements such as jumps (tables) and small obstacles are installed."

The bike club volunteers need around 40 cubic meters of gravel for the road alone – that's five truckloads of 300 euros each.

Fortunately, the 150-member association is financially supported.

The BCM donated one load from the Achner gravel works, one from the Gasthof Stern and one from the market town of Mittenwald.

"We hope that there will be donors for the two remaining loads," says Pfeffer with a wink.

In addition, the construction company Düssel made their machines available free of charge.

"Otherwise we wouldn't have been able to implement this project so quickly," admits the club boss.

Not without pride he looks at the many small and large members who spontaneously volunteered to help.

After the planned completion in two weeks, the facility still has to be fenced off.

"Actually, we had thought of public use," regrets Pfeffer.

"However, as we would be held liable as tenants in the event of accidents, only our insured members may use the facility."

No new hotel investor will come to us anytime soon.
