The Notre Dame Hospital established in 1961 is about to start the reconstruction project. At that time, the existing east and north wings will be demolished and a new 12-storey hospital building will be built on the original site. After completion, the existing outpatient building will also be refurbished. Dr. Liu Siyan, Executive Director of Notre Dame Hospital, said that the completion of the new building will greatly increase the hospital's capacity, including an increase of hospital beds from 236 to 437. It is estimated that the number of general departments will increase by 20,000 per year, and the number of specialist outpatient visits will increase from 67,000 to 7.5 per year. It is expected to meet the medical needs of the area, and it is expected to shorten the waiting time by half.
Established in 1961, Notre Dame Hospital is a hospital under the Kowloon Central Cluster, providing outpatient, inpatient, allied health, surgery and endoscopy services.
In 2016, it was included as one of the projects in the first ten-year hospital development plan.
The redevelopment plan is expected to start major works in the third quarter of this year and is scheduled to be completed in 2027. The Legislative Finance Committee is applying for funding for major works with an estimated budget of $4.3 billion.
Liu Siyan said that the Notre Dame Hospital will continue to support the network in an auxiliary role after the reconstruction, but due to the reconstruction of the original site, the area is relatively small, so it is not suitable to add an A&E department.
The redevelopment project will demolish the existing east and north wings and construct a new 12-storey hospital building on the original site; the outpatient building will remain in operation until the new hospital building is completed and then refurbished.
The current service in the hospital will be relocated from next week (17th), and will continue to seek medical treatment at other hospitals in the Kowloon Central Cluster.
Liu Siyan pointed out that after the redevelopment, the floor area of the tenth floor of the east wing and north wing will increase from 14,000 square meters to 58,000 square meters, which is four times larger than the current level.
The number of hospital beds will be increased from 236 to 437, and an additional hemodialysis center will be built to provide 16 day beds for kidney patients to wash blood. The number of radiology service rooms, day operating rooms and endoscopy rooms will also increase. Manpower is also expected to double
In terms of outpatient clinics, the number of clinics will be increased from the current 33 to 55. The number of general outpatient clinics is expected to increase from 120,000 to 140,000, and the number of specialist outpatients will increase from 67,000 to 142,000, a doubling of the number of patients. It is expected to meet the medical needs of the area, and it is expected that the waiting time can be shortened by half.
Notre Dame Hospital’s reconstruction application limit is expected to increase to nearly 500 beds. The network of Kowloon Chinese Medicine Hospital will increase more than 10,000 general consultation places. It is expected that Kai Tak Hospital will be put into service in 2025. If approved, the 10-year hospital development plan to resume work within 6 to 8 weeks is expected to be rebuilt in the second and third phases of Kwai Chung Hospital.
