Nuremberg – The electricity is flowing, the clock is ticking: Nuremberg Airport now wants to push ahead with the expansion of solar energy with all its might.

"We want to become energy self-sufficient as quickly as possible," says Klaus Dotzauer, CFO at Nuremberg Airport and managing director of the in-house service and energy division, summing up the current plan.

Nuremberg Airport: Solar systems on the parking deck and in open spaces

Nuremberg Airport is already in the process of installing new solar systems on the roof of the new multi-storey car park.

Because the modules on the upper deck of the car park are far from sufficient, the airport is now also targeting open spaces next to the runway.

As soon as possible, new solar parks will provide even more energy security on four hectares of expansion areas in the south-west of the site.

The renatured "Bucher Landgraben", which is also popular with walkers, should not be touched.

Almost 4.8 million kilowatt hours could soon be produced within sight of the tower.

At least from March to September, Nuremberg Airport would be energy self-sufficient.

With the solar power, Dürer Airport could not only cover the entire daily requirement, but would also have sufficient reserves to fill the corresponding storage capacities.

Nuremberg Airport fears an imminent power shortage

Against the background of the current situation, Dotzauer wonders whether “there will soon be enough electricity in the grid for our needs”.

He and his colleagues at Nuremberg Airport are now not “only” worried about the electricity prices, which are currently going “completely crazy”.

The latter are no longer the main problem.

"Even if we can pay for the expensive electricity, it remains questionable whether there will soon be enough electricity for us," says Dotzauer.

Despite all efforts to save energy, such as the switch to LED lighting or energy-efficient building renovations, the hunger for electricity is still huge.

Nuremberg Airport needs a whopping 20 million kilowatt hours to keep all the wheels running around the clock.

By the end of July, the car park roof should already be supplying electricity.

"That's our electricity demand forecast," says Dotzauer, putting an obviously relatively explosive strategy paper on the table.

"If electric cars will soon be rolling around everywhere here and electric air taxis will also take off from 2025 - then we will need so much electricity," says Dotzauer, tapping his finger on the course of a curve that will reach the 30th mark in impressive jumps as early as 2026 -Exceeds the million mark.

From 2029, even the relatively dizzying heights of well over 35 million kilowatt hours will be reached.

Nuremberg Airport: More than 2000 new solar modules are not enough

Behind the scenes, his employees have already examined all available roofs in order to be able to push ahead with the expansion of solar power.

2,073 modules, each with 405 watts, are currently being installed on the roof of the new car park.

"We want to be finished here in July and then get started right away," says Dotzauer between the glowing sea of ​​brand-new solar panels on the roof of the multi-storey car park.

The problem: the four thousand square meters on the sun-kissed upper deck of the new multi-storey car park, with an annual power generation of a little more than 800,000 kilowatt hours, are not enough for the enormous hunger for electricity.

Unfortunately, other roofs are not available for various reasons.

There is a lot of space right next to the runway.

However, no reflecting obstacles should be set up there with regard to flight safety.

Therefore, the airport is now targeting the properties at the southwest end of the huge area.

At present, the four-hectare areas are only being farmed extensively, i.e. hardly at all.

According to the documents, the new “electricity plan” has already been coordinated with the political level.

Time seems to be pressing.

Dürer Airport obviously wants to be able to hold the power plug itself as soon as possible.

The corona pandemic seems to be over.

That is why Nuremberg Airport is now anticipating a steep increase in passenger numbers.

New routes to popular holiday destinations for Germans have also been included in the portfolio.
