How is the freedom of the press in Germany in the face of “fake news” and “lying press” allegations?

A panel discussion will take place on Friday.

Memmingen - On Friday, May 20, at 7:30 p.m., as part of the supporting program for the "Memming Freedom Prize", this year's main topic "Freedom of the Press" will be discussed with a podium discussion from various parliamentary groups in the Bavarian state parliament.

According to Memmingen's Lord Mayor Manfred Schilder at the program presentation in April, the choice of the focus on "freedom of the press" was mainly due to the discussions about the Corona reporting in the media, which ranged from accusations of "lying press" on the one hand to "fake news" on the other enough.

After all, the designated award winner Heribert Prantl called for the defense of fundamental rights against corona measures in his polemic of spring 2021.

Until 2019, Prantl was Editor-in-Chief for almost 25 years and most recently a member of the Editor-in-Chief at the “Süddeutsche Zeitung”.

The chairman of the board of trustees for "Twelve Farmers' Articles and the Memminger Freedom Prize", Herbert Müller, was "curious to see how the local press would react to the setting of priorities".

He pointed out that the panel discussion is open to the public and that questions from the audience are expressly desired.
