With Arab and foreign participation, the work of the First International Scientific Conference on Biomedical Engineering was launched today, held by the Faculty of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering at the University of Damascus, under the title Biomedical Engineering and its Role in Developing Health Care.

Over the course of three days, participants in the conference will discuss several axes in the fields of medical engineering and its role in improving health care services in terms of diagnosis, treatment, prevention, hospital management, biostatistics, biomedical materials, creativity and innovation in medical engineering, biosimilars, medical imaging and simulation in the field of dentistry. Biomechanics, prosthetics, orthotics, and medical engineering research.

The Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Dr. Bassam Ibrahim, stressed in a speech that the conference constitutes a qualitative leap in the field of medical engineering in Syria to discuss the most important findings of scientific research, technical development and software in this field.

And the formation of a qualitative, knowledge and scientific addition to the development and modernization of this sector, indicating that Syria has been able to achieve important achievements and qualitative and medical development in terms of prevention and treatment with the availability of modern medical equipment and devices with the efforts and competencies of scientific, medical and engineering cadres despite all the conditions it has suffered during the past years.

The President of Damascus University, Dr. Muhammad Osama Al-Jabban, pointed out that the university contributes to the development of the medical sector in all its fields by supporting scientific research and studies and directing students’ research towards the problems facing this vital sector, pointing to the support of the Medical Engineering Department at the Faculty of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering with all human, technical and material capabilities. In order to qualify engineers specialized in the fields of technological devices and various programs used in medical specialties to work in hospitals and medical centers.

Conference President Dr. Muhammad Firas Hennawi pointed out the need to work for the localization of modern medical technology in Syria, starting from colleges and universities in cooperation with local and international industrial, academic and research bodies, indicating that 52 papers will be reviewed during the conference, 19 of which will be published in a special issue of the conference in the Damascus University Journal after It was judged by the Scientific Committee of the Conference.

In statements to SANA, the head of the Syrian Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, Dr. Marwan Al-Halabi, emphasized the need to achieve medical integration through cooperation between medical service providers and medical engineering to improve the quality of medical practice, noting that his lecture dealt with the latest scientific and technical developments in assisted fertilization with regard to diagnostic, therapeutic, pharmaceutical, laboratory and fertilization issues. And genetics and modern technologies that contributed significantly to the doubling of pregnancies and the quality of service provided.

Head of the Oral Medicine Department at the Faculty of Dentistry at Damascus University, Dr. Abeer Al-Jojo, drew attention to the importance of networking between disciplines to improve health care provided to citizens, explaining that her lecture focuses on laser treatments for the management of oral ulcers, as some of them are difficult to treat with medications due to the health status of the patient or children, so laser is used in physical therapy. The Iraqi researcher specializing in mechanical and medical engineering, Uday Muhammad Kazem al-Kalabi, a member of the Iraqi Engineers Syndicate, said: He is participating in two papers in the first conference on nanotechnology and its engineering and medical applications, and the second on improving the mechanical properties of a new paste using nano-cement kiln dust, which can be used in the formation of medical prosthetics.

The conference, which runs until May 18, is accompanied by an exhibition of the latest medical technologies and equipment.
