The Hong Kong Journalists Association sent an email to its members, stating that the annual general meeting will be held on the 25th of next month. At that time, a new executive committee election will be held and a vote on the revision of the articles of association will be held.
The proposed amendments include lowering the threshold for dissolution from "not less than five-sixths of all voting members by secret ballot" to "more than half of all voting members by secret ballot".
Undecided whether to run for re-election
The chairman of the Hong Kong Association of Journalists, Chen Langsheng, replied to the inquiry of "Hong Kong 01" that the executive committee formulated the relevant amendments based on the opinions of members in the past. Earlier, some members expressed their desire to revise the dissolution threshold at the special general meeting.
He mentioned that the relevant ratio was the result of the executive committee's discussion, describing it as "a drop in the middle".
The thinking behind it is that the Executive Committee wants to retain a certain degree of flexibility, that is, if the situation becomes dangerous later, the threshold will not be too high; but at the same time, it cannot be easily controlled by a small number of members attending the meeting, so retain "all voting members. "Instead of the base number of "members present", the threshold is about 200 members, which is a relatively appropriate ratio.
Chen Langsheng emphasized that the revision of the threshold for dissolution does not mean that the HKJA will "execute it soon", but just wants to tell members that the Executive Committee has a plan for the political risks it will face in the future, and it is not yet time to end it.
As for whether he will run for re-election as chairman, Chen Langsheng pointed out that there is no final decision, and there is still some time before the end of the nomination period for the executive committee.
Chen Langsheng: I am seriously considering whether to continue as the chairman of the Journalists Association. Press freedom is very fragile and needs to be defended. Li Jiachao has no plans for the time being. Will it be dissolved
