Italian energy giant Eni announced today that it is preparing to comply with Russia's demands and open a bank account in Russian rubles, after the European Union announced a softening of its stance with the Kremlin over vital supplies of natural gas.
Informed sources told Bloomberg that Eni will move to open accounts in rubles and euros with Gazprom Bank by tomorrow, Wednesday, so that it can make payments on time this month and avoid any risks threatening the flow of gas supplies.
It is noteworthy that for several weeks European companies and their lawyers have been trying to explore a way to meet the Russian demand without violating the sanctions that are intended primarily to punish Russia.
