United States is more diverse and multiracial than ever.


People of color made up 43% of the total US population in 2020, up from 34% in 2010, according to data from the 2020 Census, released in 2021.

The percentage of non-Hispanic whites fell to 57% in 2020, which represents a decrease of six percentage points from 2010, the largest decrease of any race or ethnicity.

The proportion of people who identified as Hispanic, Latino or multiracial grew the most.

While the under-18 population has dwindled over the past decade, it is rapidly diversifying.

Non-white US residents under the age of 18 now make up 53% of the underage population, up from 47% in 2010.

Hispanics, the most prevalent

Non-Hispanic white Americans remain the most prevalent group in all states except California, Hawaii, and New Mexico, as well as in the city of Washington and Puerto Rico.

There are now seven states and territories where the non-Hispanic white percentage of the population is below 50%: California, New Mexico, Nevada, Texas, Maryland, Hawaii and Puerto Rico.

In California, the Hispanic/Latino population for the first time officially became the largest racial or ethnic group in the state.

The Hispanic or Latino community now represents 39.4% of Californians, an increase from 37.6% in 2010. The non-Hispanic white population in California was 34.7% in 2020.
