But for several weeks, the wind has been turning at an accelerated speed in German politics and the Christian Democrats are returning to success.
On May 15, the CDU came out ahead in regional elections in North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW), Germany's most populous state, home to almost a quarter of the country's population.
After winning it for the first time at the SPD in 2017, she improved her score there by three points, collecting nearly 37% of the vote, accumulating a 10-point gap with her main challenger.
