The crash of a passenger train that left the Ferrocarriles de Catalunya station in Sant Boi de Llobregat, in the Barcelona metropolitan area, against an overturned freight car that loaded potash has left one dead and nine injured, confirmed a spokesman for Civil Protection of Catalonia to CNN.
The accident caused the death of the motorcyclist and the admission of two people, in serious condition, to the Hospital de San Joan Despí Moisés Broggi.
Another seven people, more mildly affected, were transferred to the Sant Boi de Llobregat Hospital and the Viladecans Hospital.
According to the Civil Protection spokesman, the remaining 76 passengers, who were unharmed, have been treated by the emergency services that arrived in the area.
Soon they will be transferred shortly to other train stations.
The President of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sánchez, sent a message of condolences through his official Twitter account to the family of the deceased train driver and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
For his part, the president of the Generalitat of Catalonia, Pere Aragonès, did the same through a tweet where he sent his condolences to the motorcyclist's family.
He also assured that he closely follows the work of the emergency teams displaced to the crash zone.
The affected passenger train covered the line known as Llobregat-Anoia, which connects the city of Barcelona with the municipalities of Manresa and Igualada.
