Grafrath has a beaver problem.
Monika Glammert-Zwölfer (Greens) drew attention to this in the municipal council.
Grafrath – The animals would fell a lot of trees in the floodplain forest along the Amper in the direction of Kottgeisering and Schöngeising.
A beaver protection officer confirmed to her that protective measures were necessary.
The trees could be protected by wire mesh.
Mayor Markus Kennerknecht (independent) sees a problem: "We are dealing with many small properties there." He thinks it is difficult to get all owners on board.
"We may be able to approach the water management authority and at least the owners of the largest properties."
(By the way: everything from the region is now also available in our regular FFB newsletter.)
When asked, Glammert-Zwölfer said that the beaver population in Grafrath was actually too high.
However, the animal is strictly protected.
Anton Hackl (Grafrather Einigkeit/GE) said that one should ask around where beavers might even be needed because they are on the brink of extinction.
"Then you could move the animals," he said.
