Oktoberfest visitors had to do without for two years, now the anticipation for Oktoberfest 2022 is huge.

With a view to a possible corona wave in autumn, however, the first critical voices are also being raised.

Munich – Two long Corona years are behind us and it looks like life is slowly returning to normal.

The largest folk festival in the world, the Munich Oktoberfest, is finally set to rise again from September 17th to October 3rd, 2022.

A huge relief for hosts and passionate Oktoberfest goers - not only in Munich.

With a view to Corona, however, there is already initial criticism of the city's plans.

The Greens health expert Janosch Dahmen thinks that the risk of a possible corona wave in autumn is far too high.

"I'm not sure if it's wise or right to make promises now that large gatherings of people should definitely be possible again in autumn," said the politician on Tuesday (May 17) to

Bayerischer Rundfunk

Oktoberfest 2022: Expert critical - "Not sure if it's wise"

According to Dahmen, it is important for people to exercise caution and precaution instead of making promises that politicians may not be able to keep in the end.

After all, there is a great danger of new variants of the corona virus.

And that could spread extremely quickly at a mass event like the Wiesn, which attracts an average of around six million visitors from all over the world.

Bavaria's Health Minister Klaus Holetschek (CSU) rejected Dahmen's criticism and defended the positive Oktoberfest decision by Munich Mayor Dieter Reiter (SPD).

"It is undisputed that such a large event with guests from many countries means a risk of infection," said Holetschek.

But there are still good reasons for letting the Oktoberfest take place.

"This decision is also justifiable in view of the current development of the corona pandemic."

Cancellation of the Wiesn 2022 would be a disaster for everyone involved

Should the pandemic situation actually prevent Oktoberfest 2022, that would be a severe blow.

After all, the planning for the Wiesn is already in full swing - and from the service to the taxi driver to the innkeeper, livelihoods depend on her.

The cancellation of the Oktoberfest was a huge disappointment last year, and another setback would be an economic catastrophe for those affected.

The number of reservations also shows how much people long for the Oktoberfest: Many tables in the festival tents have already been reserved.
