A year since the Meron disaster: Those responsible have failed miserably - but continue in office Israel today

2022-05-17T20:21:05.389Z

The police were not solely responsible for the proper existence of the celebration • The responsibility and guilt should not be removed from the Ministry of Religions and site managers, who had a year to determine who is responsible for the safety collapse • Hopefully the celebration will go smoothly and return to a happy traditional holiday

Show me another country where 45 civilians are crushed to death, hundreds of celebrants are injured, and those who were responsible for maintaining their safety and failure - continue in office.

And worse, with the same responsibility for preserving human life.

It has been said - the mills of justice do not grind.

In one of the interviews conducted by Amir Ohana, the Minister of Internal Security at the time of the incident, he claimed, among other things, that "responsibility does not mean guilt."

One can argue with the statement, not with the result.

There are two cases where it is difficult or impossible to prove guilt: when the commander in the field has only responsibility - but he has no authority, or when he has only authority - without responsibility.

About a year ago, shortly after the disaster happened, the commander of the Northern District, Shimon Lavi, stood in front of the cameras and boldly said, "I bear responsibility."

But to this day he and his men are convinced that although powers have been given to him, he and they are not guilty.

Commissioner Yaakov Shabtai also claims innocence, claiming, among other things, that the disaster was caused by an engineering failure and that the incident was district-wide, even though Lavi's commander approved the operational plan. And the minister?

So who the hell is to blame?

This question was also asked by the members of the investigation committee for the Shlomiel escape of the six terrorists from Gilboa Prison.

Surprisingly - or not - not only did no commander admit guilt, but whenever the question was thrown into the air, a festival of throwing guilt began from one to another.

carrying responsibility.

Thus, as in Meron - even in Gilboa the same role holders remained in place as if nothing had happened.

The only difference between the two cases, which may contain a hint of the future, is that while the Meron committee is still sitting on the bench, the Gilboa committee thought that the blame may be placed not on the SAG, but on those responsible: IPS commissioner, deputy, northern district commander And the prison commander.

However, the police were not solely responsible for the proper existence of the revelry.

The responsibility and blame should also not be removed from the Ministry of Religions and the site's administrators, who had a year to determine who was responsible for the safety collapse.

The commission of inquiry is expected to repay the debt to the families of the dead and injured and clarify who are to blame for the omissions.

It is to be hoped that this year the revelry will go smoothly and return to being a happy traditional holiday, and also that the celebrants will take care to keep themselves.

Because after all, everyone already knows that in the end no one will be held responsible for their lives.
