Austrian Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg announced that his country does not intend to follow the example of Finland and Sweden in their efforts to join the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
Austrian media quoted Schallenberg as saying on the sidelines of a meeting of European Union foreign ministers in Brussels: “Our geographical situation is completely different from Sweden and Finland, and we have a completely different history, and I think this should be taken into account,” noting that “it is right to invest more money in Austria security.
In response to a question about whether Austria's security is still guaranteed despite its alliance neutrality, Schallenberg said... that "the armed forces of his country should not be underestimated."
Sweden officially announced yesterday that it would follow Finland's example in seeking NATO membership, and Russia condemned the two countries' plans, pledging to take "military and other technical response measures" in this regard.
