China has strongly criticized the United States' insistence on signing a bill that helps Taiwan obtain observer status in the World Health Organization, stressing that Taiwan's affairs are an internal Chinese affair.

US President Joe Biden signed a bill directing his secretary of state to develop a strategy to "restore Taiwan observer status".

"The Taiwan issue is an internal Chinese affair... and the China principle is one of the basic norms governing international relations," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian told a press conference yesterday, Xinhua news agency quoted Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian as saying at a press conference yesterday. The participation of the Chinese region of Taiwan in the activities of the World Health Organization should be treated according to the one-China principle.”

"The Chinese central government attaches great importance to the health well-being of our compatriots in Taiwan and has made appropriate arrangements for the region's participation in global health affairs, provided that the one-China principle is followed," he added.

He said, "We urge the United States to abide by the one-China principle and the three joint communiques between China and the United States, abide by international law and the basic norms governing international relations, deal wisely and properly with Taiwan-related issues and not use this law to help it expand its so-called "international space," otherwise it will cause further damage to China-US relations and peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait.”
