Schleswig-Holstein's CDU Prime Minister Günther relies on Jamaica.

Greens and FDP are open to this, but each favor their own two-party alliances with the Union.

A decision should be made soon.

Kiel - After the first exploratory talks, a new edition of the ruling Jamaica coalition of CDU, Greens and FDP is still in the air in Schleswig-Holstein.

A continuation of the incumbent coalition is "from our point of view the best alliance" in view of the challenges, said Prime Minister Daniel Günther (CDU) after meeting with the FDP and the Greens in a hotel in Kiel.

On Wednesday, the executive CDU state board will analyze the results.

"We will make a quick decision." After that, the Union will invite you to further meetings.

Mathematically, a third partner is not necessary at all, because the CDU would already have a majority in the state parliament with one of the two parties - in the case of the Greens even a two-thirds majority necessary for constitutional changes.

Günther committed to more ambitious climate goals.

It is about combining climate protection with job creation.

He justified the fact that the consultations with the Greens lasted five hours and the FDP only a good two hours with the great agreement between the Union and the Liberals on many points.

Günther emphasized the good atmosphere at the meetings.

"Of course there is great euphoria to continue this coalition at the moment." Many wished for Jamaica to continue.

"But for us it is important that there is a solid basis for the next five years."

FDP country chief Heiner Garg said: "We are very satisfied from the conversation".

He was open to Jamaica, but referred to a clear majority in the state parliament for black and yellow.

FDP Federal Vice Wolfgang Kubicki was "deeply relaxed".

All sides talked to everyone.

"It will result in a Jamaica alliance." When asked about the possibility of being the fifth wheel in a three-way alliance, FDP top candidate Bernd Buchholz said: "The starting point is the same for the Greens as it is for us: it's enough with the other alone .

It's a different situation than not being needed.”

The Greens also affirmed that their preferences lay elsewhere.

"The talks have shown that there are good prospects for implementing consistent climate protection in conjunction with social justice and for governing the country in a stable manner," said lead candidate Monika Heinold and co-lead candidate Aminata Touré.

For Heinold it is crucial to combine climate protection with social justice.

The conversation made it clear where there was a close relationship between black and green in terms of content.

"We were very happy about that." Touré named a two-party alliance with the CDU as the preferred model, but was open to talks beyond that.

For Günther, Jamaica would offer a huge opportunity to clearly advance Schleswig-Holstein in the next five years.

A new coalition must tackle the existing challenges very aggressively, said Günther.

You have to be ambitious, speed things up, reduce bureaucracy.

"We have a lot of overlaps, and we have at least found a common view of the next five years."

Günther justifies his course towards Jamaica by saying that this coalition has worked very successfully since 2017 and is the desired coalition among the population.

This alliance "simply solved many social conflicts in Schleswig-Holstein".

Everyone already knew each other.

“Two weeks ago we worked together as a matter of course in a cabinet.

The state elections have not changed anything about that either.” This trust is still there.

Günther referred to the strong CDU result in the state elections.

His party will make it clear that this must be reflected in a coalition agreement.

It had to be clarified how resilient a three-party alliance would be, even though only two partners were needed.

This is already new territory.

The fact that the political fringes were weakened with the election is also an argument for keeping a proven team together.

In the May 8 election, the CDU and Greens gained 43.4 and 18.3 percent, respectively, while the FDP slipped to 6.4 percent.

In a letter to the members, the Greens' exploratory team wrote that there were two election winners who could form the next government with joint responsibility - "a government that brings together instead of dividing, which combines ecology and economy, creates jobs with the energy transition and designed the ecological and social transformation in such a way that people can participate and things are fair in the country".
