The Government of Gabriel Boric announced a new state of constitutional exception on Monday night for the Chilean provinces of Arauco and Biobío, in the Biobío region, located in the center of the country, after different acts of violence that have occurred in the area in recent weeks.

The measure allows the deployment of the Armed Forces to protect security.

Although, from the Palacio de La Moneda they indicated that this will be limited to the highways "to allow the free movement of people and supplies."

"We have decided to make use of all State tools to provide security to our citizens," Chilean Interior Minister Izkia Siches reported in a message to the press.

“It is clear that in recent times we have had an increase in acts of violence on the roads and we have witnessed cowardly attacks. We have also seen extended road closures that put free transit at risk and cut supply chains,” she explained.

Previously, the president of Chile, Gabriel Boric, had said as president-elect that his government would not renew the state of constitutional exception in the provinces of Arauco and Biobío.

However, the Executive announced the decree of the state of emergency after failing to obtain sufficient support within the ruling party to promote an "intermediate state".

The Minister of the Interior also announced that she asked the Public Ministry to have a prosecutor with preferential dedication to the investigation of criminal organizations "that threaten the coexistence of the Biobío and Araucanía Regions, such as drug trafficking and theft, so as to guarantee to all parties that crimes will be prosecuted as required by law.”

On the other hand, Siches reported that the Government will promote the processing of the project to create a Ministry of Indigenous Peoples "to strengthen the State's capacity to meet the needs of our peoples."

And he announced an investment to "improve the quality of life" of the inhabitants of the Biobío and Araucanía regions.
