The Secretary-General of the Italian League, Matteo Salvini, has rejected the imposition of a European ban on Russian energy supplies, saying that this would harm Europe more than Russia.
"The embargo on Russian oil and gas, according to the data, harms Italy and Europe more because Russia sells its gas and oil to China and Asia, while we have to turn off the heating devices and close the companies," the Italian news agency AKI quoted Salvini as saying in an interview with reporters after a meeting with Prime Minister Mario Draghi.
Salvini pointed out that Italy cannot at the present time dispense with Russian gas.
And the Commissioner for Foreign Policy in the European Union, Josep Borrell, ruled out yesterday the speedy reach of a new package of sanctions against Russia, including the imposition of an embargo on Russian oil.
