The former prime minister and current political head of the Five Star Movement, Giuseppe Conte, renewed his refusal to send other weapons to Ukraine.
The Italian Aki news agency quoted Conte as telling reporters: The Five Star Movement confirms its position... Italy should not supply more weapons, noting that Italy has already provided three batches of weapons to Ukraine since the 24th of last February.
Conte considered that Italy needed to take the initiative, not alone but with other European countries in order to push for a negotiated solution to end the war.
For his part, the Secretary-General of the Italian League, Matteo Salvini, considered that sending more weapons to Ukraine delays the chances of reaching peace between Moscow and Kiev and creates death across the border.
Salvini also expressed his refusal to impose a European ban on Russian energy supplies, saying that this would harm Europe more than Russia.
Speaking to reporters after a meeting with Prime Minister Mario Draghi, he explained that the ban on Russian oil and gas, according to the data, harms Italy and Europe more because Russia sells its gas and oil to China and Asia, while we have to turn off heating devices and close businesses.
Salvini stressed that Italy could not, at the present time, dispense with Russian gas.
The Commissioner for Foreign Policy in the European Union, Josep Borrell, ruled out yesterday that a quick new package of sanctions against Russia, including an embargo on Russian oil, could be reached.
