In October 2021, the Petit Robert integrated the word "iel", but only in its digital version.
A curious pronoun, unknown to the general public, which met this definition:
“Personal subject pronoun of the third person singular (iel) and plural (iels), used to evoke a person regardless of gender.”
A controversy ensued up to the highest levels of the State, the Minister of Education, Jean-Michel Blanquer, recalling that
“inclusive writing is not the future of the French language”
.
Even the first lady, Brigitte Macron, had added her two cents to the debate, judging that the "he" and the "she" were already quite sufficient.

By honoring the “iel” this time in its paper version, the Petit Robert makes what is called a “putsch”.
There is nothing innocent about this integration in that it stems from a militant approach.
