At a day of action in Höhenkirchen-Siegertsbrunn, several initiatives informed seniors and their relatives about how pensioners can still live at home in old age.

Höhenkirchen-Siegertsbrunn

– Those who had a pen and enough paper were well advised.

A good half-dozen initiatives provided information on the subject of “living at home longer in old age” at the “NaturGlück” children’s home in Höhenkirchen-Siegertsbrunn.

The event was part of the Bavaria-wide action week on "Living in old age".

Who will help grandpa with the weeding?

Where can grandma find help with the new tablet or with hanging up the curtains?

The “living together” working group of the future workshop, the SüdOst adult education center, the Outpatient Senior Citizens Service (ASS) and the municipality invited senior citizens and their relatives to the information event.

Guest of honor Kerstin Schreyer (CSU) spoke about state programs and her experiences from her time as Minister of State.

“We like to push the topic to the back.

Not everyone deals with age in a timely manner," she said.

The member of parliament and former Minister for Social Affairs and for Housing and Transport wants to focus more on the interests of senior citizens.

Topics such as growing old with dignity should always be raised on the tableau.

“We need to pool resources”

Schreyer relies on technical aids and referred to the Bavarian Digital Ministry.

It would be a relief if old people could organize their doctor's appointments via tablet.

The problem: While one or the other senior is already busy skyping with the grandson, contemporaries are struggling with the technology.

The VHS SüdOst offers courses on digital participation.

"In view of the demographic development, we have to deal with it." The co-founder of the multi-generational cooperative "HandinHand" and Caritas chairwoman Munich-Freising, Gabriele Stark-Angermeier, wants to close "gaps with creative ideas".

Charities should avoid competing with each other.

"We have to pool resources," said Stark-Angermeier.

She is concerned with the “little everyday help”: helping seniors to do their shopping, changing the lightbulb.

Something like that.

Mediation of helpers for seniors

As Sonja Dallmeier from the “HandinHand” board reported, the number of childcare contracts has increased due to Corona.

"Our help is being used even more." Diana Müller, spokeswoman for the "working group living together", could well imagine placing seniors as helpers.

The loan grandmother to babysit or go for a walk with Lumpi - such systems are already being prepared.

The senior citizens' representative of the district, Tanja Wohlmuth, informed about offers of the "outreach senior citizens' work" of the district.

The district is also concerned with short-term help in everyday life.

Offers are voluntary, free of charge and confidential.

If necessary, the district office will put you in touch with suitable bodies, such as the nursing service, debt counseling or the social welfare office.

Who helps if the degree of care is rejected?

Where is financial support available?

At the moment, “post sponsors” are being trained to help over bureaucratic hurdles.

At the ASS, efforts are also being made to ensure low-threshold access.

"Even if it's just a question of having your toenails cut," said Christina Lorenz: "We'll find a solution!" Ursula Mayer from the Hospizkreis Ottobrunn encourages seniors and their relatives not to be afraid "to seek contact with us".
