Bamako-Sana
The government in Mali announced that it thwarted a coup attempt carried out by army officers and soldiers with the support of a Western country last week.
"A group of Malian officers and non-commissioned officers tried to carry out a coup on May 12, in an effort to break the dynamics of rebuilding the country," the government said in a statement broadcast on state television, AFP reported.
The statement explained that "these soldiers are supported by a Western country," without mentioning its name, noting that the attempt was thwarted "thanks to the high professionalism of the defense and security forces."
No details of the coup attempt were published, nor of those accused of carrying it out, while the army reinforced security measures at the entrances to the capital, Bamako, and at the borders.
Mali has been suffering since 2012 from security and political crises and terrorist acts carried out by groups linked to Al-Qaeda and ISIS.
